Health and Wellness At The Office

Like many American jobs, employees spend most of their working hours on the computer, sitting at a desk. Surprise: this isn’t healthy for you. Incentivising health and wellness in your office not only will benefit the overall health of your employees, but increase productivity as well.

There are multiple choices for boosting health and wellness at your office. Here are some easy to start ways to get started:

  1. Wellness challenges. These can be long term or short term, and the options are endless. You can reward your employees for most steps taken (tracked by a mobile app or fitness tracker), amount of water consumed in a month, time spent at a gym or studio, etc. Think of it as New Year’s Resolutions, but throughout the year.

  2. Nap/Prayer/Meditation room. So maybe your office doesn’t have room for Google HQ multi-floor slides and lounges, but dedicating an unused space or corner of the room for quiet time for your employees is extremely beneficial. It doesn’t take much, either- just a couple of pillows, yoga mats or throws on the floor, dim or natural lighting, and a no-shoe policy.

  3. Community or Intramural sports. Check your local town or community center for team sports for you and your employees to join. Most of these sports have practices and pick-up games that will be held after office hours, and close the season with playoffs. It’s also a great way to volunteer time for the community as well, especially if the center needs help with equipment build and tear down, referees, etc.

  4. Reimbursement or gym/studio memberships. Another great option to incentivise health is by purchasing or reimbursing your employees for their gym or health-related memberships. This gives flexibility to your employees to join a gym or yoga studio of their choosing, and takes the cost out of the picture for them.

  5. Flextime. This can help alleviate the stress of keeping a strict schedule for you and your employees. Having a rigid schedule at your office may be beneficial for particular days, especially during busy months, but outside of that, it can put a burden on what they’re doing outside of work. Letting your employees be parents, students, caretakers, or whatever else they do outside of work removes the choice of work vs. life and in all will create a better work-life balance.
