Every week, TicketForce brings you news on one of four industries: racing, sports, theatre, or music. This week’s #MusicWrap delivers the shocking news of Taylor Swift removing all of her music from the popular music streaming application, Spotify.
Spotify has provided music lovers everywhere the opportunity to stream their favorite tunes whenever, wherever. While users have to listen to short advertisements every few songs unless they pay a mere $10 per month, Spotify has changed the way we listen to music.
Taylor Swift however, surprised the 40 million Spotify users, 2 million of which follow the artist, when she decided to pull all of her music from the app. Swift spoke out about the incident saying, “Music is changing so quickly, and the landscape of the music industry itself is changing so quickly, that everything new, like Spotify, all feels to me a bit like a grand experiment," Swift said. "And I'm not willing to contribute my life's work to an experiment that I don't feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists and creators of this music. And I just don't agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free."
Spotify responded to her comment agreeing that artists have the right to be paid for their work and be protected from piracy. Spotify also recreated the now blank Taylor Swift profile, having some fun and creating clever messaging that now reads, “@taylorswift13, we were both young when we first saw you, but now there’s more than 40 million of us who want you to stay, stay, stay. It’s a love story, baby, just say, Yes.”
While Spotify begs Taylor Swift to return to the app, it doesn’t seem as though she will be giving in any time soon. Whose side are you on? Sound off in the comments below, on Facebook, or by sending a tweet to @ticketforce.
